Self-worth is an intricate and complicated measurement of how you view your own personal value. It’s an internal sense of being “good enough.” And although highly intimate, often this intangible idea is clouded by comparison or competition- leaving you to evaluate how you rank in relation to others. Perhaps you’ve even thought before, “Am I as pretty as her? As skinny? Well-liked? Have I achieved as much as she has? Do I have the potential to?”
While looking to others as a marker of what matters is surely human nature, it is undoubtedly a dangerous practice. This is because earthly indicators of “value” whether it be by beauty, success, or importance are erratic and ever-changing. They are not standardized across cultures or belief systems, and striving to satisfy them will always leave you wanting more and thus, perpetually questioning if your definition of “good enough” has been met yet.
So what if, instead, you sought to sew your self-worth into something more stable? Something steady and never-changing: God’s Word. What would happen if you tuned in to what your Creator has to say about you and tuned out what the world wants you to believe? I wonder if a renewed sense of self built on a foundation of truth is just what you need to recognize the beauty, success, and importance that have existed within you all along. And not because you look a certain way or achieved anything in specific, but simply because you are a chosen child of God.
Let’s take a closer look ☻
For starters, your Father in Heaven declares that you are worthy. Isaiah 43:4 reads, “You are precious and honored in my sight.” God created you and he values you. And He claims this with no strings attached or contingencies in place. How freeing to know you are loved and esteemed purely for being, you!
Next, the Lord states that you are chosen. Jeremiah 1:5 asserts, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart.” This gets me every time- God of the universe knows YOU and chose YOU specifically and intentionally for this life. Before you were ever conceived in your mother’s womb, He had a plan and a place for you. Out of all Creation and animals and beings, how special to realize He cares that deeply for you, too!
God also proclaimsthat you are enough. 2 Corinthians 12:9 recites, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” The good news here is- God is perfect so you don’t have to be. In fact, He revels in the fact that your mortal imperfections facilitate the need to depend on and have a relationship with Him. How comforting to know that such a Holy God accepts you and wants you just as you are!
Lastly, your Savior deems that you are cherished. Matthew 6:26 insists, “Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap yet your Heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?” Meditate on that for a minute. If God provides for the mere birds in the sky, how much more does He care about you- His beloved child? You are highly favored in His eyes and He looks upon you with great admiration. How much peace is found in the provision and promises of your Creator!
So there you have it, friend. You are called worthy, chosen, enough and cherished- all by your Father in Heaven. If you can cling to these eternal declarations when questioning or searching for your value on this earth- it just might change everything. Say goodbye to comparison and competition and hello to the confidence that comes from being a treasured daughter of the King ♡
